What is a Hash?
A cryptographic hash function maps absolutely any size of data (a single word or an entire operating system file) into a fixed-size character string. It is a one-way mathematical function entirely impossible to reverse.
Why do we need different algorithms?
Algorithms like MD5 and SHA-1 are extremely fast but are considered cryptographically broken because malicious actors can compute collisions. Modern software relies on SHA-256 and SHA-512 for secure identity verification.
